In the hour the sky split open and the darkness poured through, an enemy rose that no single banner could withstand. So two banners became one.
“Horde And Alliance United Against The Darkness.”
For generations the Horde and the Alliance waged war across the broken face of Azeroth. Fields burned, capitals mourned, and heroes on both sides were laid beneath stone that named them enemies. It was a war no one remembered starting and no one could imagine ending — until the night the Veil tore open and something far older than faction or flag climbed through.
It began without warning. Across every continent, the firmament cracked like old glass and a lightless void bled through — not shadow, but the absence of light itself. From the rifts came the Darkness: formless horrors that devoured colour, sound, and finally life. Neither Orgrimmar's war machines nor Stormwind's holy light could hold them. For the first time in living memory, the wargrounds fell silent — not from victory, but from loss. There were too few left on either side to keep fighting each other.
When the enemy is the night itself, there is no honour in fighting alone.
In the great cathedral of Stormwind — neutral ground chosen by neither side and claimed by both — the leaders of Horde and Alliance met beneath a truce older than the war. Warchief and King stood face to face, and for the first time in a hundred years, they did not draw steel. A heraldic crest was forged that night: half the crimson axe of the Horde, half the golden lion of the Alliance, joined at the heart where a single flame burned. They called it the Pact, and those who swore it became the United Army of Azeroth.
What marched out of that cathedral was something Azeroth had never seen: orc and human shoulder to shoulder, elf and tauren sharing campfires, dwarf and troll trading war-stories. The old hatreds did not vanish overnight — no pact can erase a century of blood — but they were set down, one by one, like weapons stacked against a wall. There was a greater enemy now, and it did not care which flag you carried. It cared only that you burned.
The united host rode to the largest rift and held the line. Where a single banner would have broken, the combined strength of both peoples held. Slowly, foot by foot, the Darkness was pushed back. The Veil was mended — not fully, never fully — but enough that the sun rose again over Azeroth, and the children of both factions saw it together.
The war against the Darkness never truly ended; it only quieted. And so the Pact endures. In this realm, Horde and Alliance share cities, raid together, and trade freely. You may roll an orc or a human, a troll or a gnome — and whichever you choose, you stand beside every other player as kin. There are no enemy factions here. There is only the United Army, and the darkness that still waits beyond the Veil, watching for the moment the Pact should ever break.
Because the Pact dissolved the faction barrier entirely, every player — regardless of whether they chose the Horde or the Alliance at character creation — can go anywhere, group with anyone, and earn everything the realm has to offer. There are no red zones, no hostile guards turning you away from an enemy capital, no Battlegrounds that split the community in two. The whole of Azeroth is open to every champion who swears the Pact.
An orc can walk the streets of Stormwind and browse the auction house in the Cathedral Square. A human can stroll through Orgrimmar's Valley of Strength and bank beside the Warchief's throne. Every capital city — Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus, Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, Undercity — welcomes every race. The guards do not attack. The flight masters do not turn you away. The innkeepers will rent you a warm bed no matter which banner you were born under. If you can reach a city on the map, you can enter it, rest in it, and call it home.
The faction walls that once carved the world in half are gone. A Horde character can pick up the same quests in Elwynn Forest, Westfall, and Darkshire that an Alliance character can — and an Alliance character can quest through the Barrens, Durotar, and Mulgore just as freely. Every quest giver in the game will speak to you, offer you their tasks, and reward you for completing them, no matter your race or faction. There is no content locked behind a red or blue flag. If a quest exists in the world, it is yours to take.
Quest rewards, dungeon drops, raid loot, reputation gains, and crafted gear are all available to every player on equal terms. A troll warrior can earn the same reputation rewards from an Alliance-aligned faction that a human paladin can, because those factions no longer see Horde and Alliance as enemies — they see the United Army. Whether you are chasing a rare drop in Stratholme, grinding Timbermaw Hold reputation, or rolling on loot in a forty-man raid, your race and your starting faction never limit what you can earn. Every reward in the realm is within reach of every champion who swears the Pact.
Parties, raids, guilds, and groups are fully cross-faction. An orc tank, a human healer, a night elf hunter, and an undead mage can form a party and clear a dungeon together without a single restriction. Guilds can recruit from both factions. The auction house is shared. Trade chat is shared. The entire social fabric of the realm is woven from both peoples, because on this realm there is only one people: the United Army of Azeroth.
This is the Time of The Pact. The lion and the wolf march as one — and the night has learned to fear them.

The recorded history of the realm, from the first rift to the present day.
Without warning the Veil tears across every continent. The Darkness pours through and devours all in its path. Both Horde and Alliance lose ground simultaneously — for the first time, the old war becomes irrelevant.
Warchief and King meet in Stormwind's cathedral on neutral ground. No steel is drawn. The heraldic crest of the Pact is forged — crimson axe and golden lion, joined at a single flame.
The United Army of Azeroth rides to the largest rift and holds the line. The combined strength of both peoples turns the tide where either alone would have fallen.
Foot by foot the Darkness is pushed back. The Veil is mended enough that the sun returns. The war quiets but never ends — the Pact endures as a permanent alliance.
Horde and Alliance share every city, every zone, and every quest. Players of every race can enter both capitals, group together, and earn the same rewards regardless of faction. The realm opens its gates to new champions — and the Darkness still watches from beyond, waiting for the Pact to break.
